Guy Palmer, director
Dr. Guy Palmer directs the School for Global Animal Health at Washington State University. A world-renowned researcher, Dr. Palmer and his colleagues use genomics and proteomics to identify new targets for vaccine development with the goal of preventing infectious diseases.
Dr. Palmer is a member of the National Academies Institute of Medicine. They are developing a vaccine against Anaplasma marginale, the most prevalent tick-borne pathogen of cattle worldwide, infecting more than two-thirds of the cattle in some regions. In addition to addressing a need for a vaccine against this specific animal pathogen, this research effort is leading to new approaches to improve the safety and efficacy of vaccines, including agents at risk for use as bioterrorism agents.
Dr. Palmer and has led collaborative research programs in southern and eastern Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Currently, he directs a multi-institutional infectious diseases research program in Latin America. He is board-certified in anatomic pathology and is a Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.
