Dr Njenga is trained as veterinarian with advanced training and research in emerging infectious diseases. He currently coordinates the integrated human-animal health (One Health) program with the CDC regional program in Kenya. Notably, he initiated studies to determine etiologies of acute febrile illness in a remote region of Kenya that identified a new strain of Rickettsia and documented high prevalence in humans of another rickettsial pathogen not previously reported in the East Africa. 

Dr. Njenga’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Enhancing collaboration between human and animal health in Kenya.
  • Enhancing capacity for disease surveillance and outbreak management at the Ministry of Livestock Development in Kenya.
  • Conducting research at the human-animal interface.

Dr. Njenga is Head of the One Health Program, Global Disease Detection Program for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention- Kenya and a Professor in the Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health.
